5 Ways to De-Stress

We do a lot as moms, or should I say – we do A LOT as moms. And no matter how organized or scheduled we are, life is not easy…and it can and will become just little bit overwhelming at times. Our schedules and deadlines become one. The kids and our husbands need something {everything!} all the time. As moms we are always trying to fulfill certain expectations. Those of not only society and our peers, but of our children and spouses as well. And perhaps the most critical expectations are our own.

But we are only human, and realizing that we need a break or just a little time out is a great way to reboot and re-energize. We owe it not only to ourselves, but to our families as well. Because after all, if momma ain’t feeling good – well…the truth is, it reflects on our entire family and their well being too.

So when I become a little overwhelmed, here are my top 5 favorite ways to de-stress ::

Take a Break

Step back. Take a breather. I know, I know…the never-ending pile of laundry is yet to disappear and those dishes are stacked so high you’re wondering if that lady from the Cascade commercials will ever show up to rescue you.  But over the years, I have learned that sometimes it’s okay to leave things undone. Trust me – they will still be there tomorrow!

Go for a Walk or Run

Not only will this let you take a nice, scenic break, it is also an awesome way to clear your mind and release some stress too. Exercise has endless benefits for your mind, body, and soul. It may take some planning and effort to schedule some time to sweat, but it is definitely worth it.

Have a Moms Night Out

Meet up with some friends who also have children, and if possible – children the same age as yours. Being able to talk to someone who can relate helps you realize that you are not the only one who put your shirt on inside out this morning and then had to run into the bathroom at Target to flip it around.

Have a Date Night

Call up the babysitter and have a nice night out on the town! Don’t have the money or the energy to dress up? My husband and I have learned that even a quick date to Starbucks or the grocery store really helps us take a break and just have some time alone too. {Plus, I have found it easier to get someone to watch the kids for an hour or so during the day rather than for a whole night out. Hello, grandparents!!}

Have Some Quiet Time Alone

But when?!?! I know this is a difficult one for me. And sometimes, my quiet time is after 9 pm when everyone has gone to bed…even my husband. I make sure the television stays off, and I just sit alone in the living room on my couch or at the kitchen table with a notebook or a book. Just kind of taking in the quiet.

Yes, at times this may all seem impossible as a mom to TWO toddlers. But taking time for me and seeking the help I need seems to lift a huge weight off my shoulders.  I am always open to new suggestions though, so I want to know – how do you de-stress and make time for YOU?

  1. I’m a definite go for a run type of girl. I need to just sweat it out sometimes! Lately I have also found myself just wanting to be in my bed reading a book for a while at night as well. I leave the computer and tv alone and just relax in a novel. It definitely de-stresses me much more than being in front of a screen! Great tips!

  2. Awesome tips Connie. A great reminder to take time for yourself every now and then. My favorite way to de-stress is to run out for a quick pedicure. While getting pretty toes, it also gives you a chance to catchup on reading, emails or even a quick nap!

  3. Awesome tips! I destress by watching my favorite shows. I have tons recorded because I hardly have time to actually watch. I also like to just write out my thoughts I feel a lot of times i am just thinking and can’t even sleep because my mind is working as soon as i write it all out i feel better and can finally rest.

  4. Great tips and things I need to work on myself for sure! I am such an internalizer, and these are all great ways to get it out and be a better person and mama!!
