A Houston Moms Guide to the Best Food Blogs and Online Recipes

Baking and cooking have been two of my biggest hobbies for as long as I can remember. It is embarrassing to admit this, but I’ve seen every episode of the Great British Baking Show on Netflix at least twice. Side note:: if you’re in need of some feel good TV right now, this is the show to binge!

In this insane COVID-crazy era, I think all of us have been picking up the pots and pans more than we had before. This can lead to cooking fatigue if you’re repeating the same meals over and over. So, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite recipes from some of my favorite food blogs below. I hope you’ll find inspiration in the resources I’ve linked here. Happy cooking and bon appétit!

Breakfast::

Everyone’s heard of the Pioneer Woman, but I think I’ve got bragging rights because I knew about her before she hit it big on the Food Network. I read her blog religiously and subscribed to her weekly emails… I even met her on her very first cookbook tour and got her autograph! When I’m in a rush to get a delicious breakfast on the table, her recipe for Aunt Edna’s Sour Cream Pancakes is my foolproof go-to. Oh, and her amazing Cinnamon Rolls are another recipe that I’ve made at least a dozen times.

Another super easy, ridiculously simple pull-it-out-of-my back-pocket recipe is this one for Overnight Oats from Damn Delicious. Made mostly from pantry staples, this recipe makes it easy to feed your kids a healthy breakfast with minimal prep. Chungah Ree started this website as a hobby, but it has since blossomed into an amazing collection of seriously delicious recipes.

Another food blogger I’ve recently become obsessed with is Lisa Bryan from Downshiftology. I stumbled upon her website while looking up recipes for my Vitamix and I have been busy cooking stuff off her page ever since. Her recipe for Easy and Traditional Shakshuka is perfect for when your fridge is a bit bare but you still want to serve a hearty breakfast.

Lunch::

Chrissy Teigen’s Cravings is another website that I love to check in on periodically. She and hubby John Legend are absolute pros in the kitchen. His LEGENDary Fried Chicken is requested by my children all the time. Another plus to hitting up her site? Their kids are adorable and the home videos are flipping hilarious.

Deb from Smitten Kitchen is truly one of the best culinary resources out there. Her pantry guide is incredibly helpful for anyone needing help on how to stock their kitchens. I, horrifyingly, had most of the ingredients she listed in the post. Eek! All of her recipes turn out beautifully, but I’ve recently had this Chopped Salad on repeat.

Dinner::

Ali from Gimme Some Oven is yet another favorite food blogger, and her recipe for Chicken Enchiladas is my husband’s favorite meal. I think her recipe for enchilada sauce has changed our lives. Seriously. Her Lemony Lentil Soup is another regular in our dinner rotation.

My parents gifted me an Instant Pot a few years ago and it has been a workhorse appliance in my kitchen ever since. Yes, it doesn’t do all things well {I still prefer my trusty Zojirushi rice cooker to make my rice for me}, but any recipes requiring braising or slow cooking will really shine in the IP. Married couple Amy and Jacky of Pressure Cook Recipes have curated a brilliant list of IP meals. They personally oversee the testing of each recipe, and the scientific way in which they approach cooking is both neat and refreshing. One recipe of theirs that I make time and again is the Beef Stroganoff

Desserts::

David Lebovitz is living the life that I {not so} secretly wish I had. A trained pastry chef, he relocated from San Francisco, California to Paris, France, in 2004 and hasn’t looked back since. His book Ready For Dessert is one that I reference quite often. All of his recipes are “magnifique,” but I have to say, I am OBSESSED with his French Chocolate Cake

Another website I adore is Sally’s Baking Addiction. I guess it takes one to know one because I am definitely addicted to baking Sally’s recipes. One that I make far too frequently is the Lemon Bars with Shortbread Crust
