It’s hard to believe anywhere else felt like home.
The move to Houston was fast. It was furious. It was hella emotional.
And, despite all of those things, it was GOOD.
We fell hard and we fell fast.
I love this city so much and here’s why.
Diversity
There’s a diversity to this city that my soul craved for so long. With opportunities to learn and grow far beyond what I could have received had I not moved here. What I love even more than the continued growth is my son’s ability to grow up knowing those who think, look, and act differently than he does. I cherish the opportunity to challenge all that I knew to be “true”, to learn about cultures different than my own and to appreciate others around me. The diversity in this city allows us to explore things that were not previously available to us prior to our big city move, and for that, we will always be grateful.
Raising a Family in Houston
If there’s an idea you have, Houston has an opportunity to explore it. A refreshing experience is an ability to try new things. Not sure if you’d like something? Give it a try because there’s a place in Houston that provides whatever service you or your kiddo is interested in.
In addition to the diversity, the ways in which this city allows my child to learn and explore never stops amazing me. He’s grown fond of juijitsu lately, and there are also places to take fencing, art, robotics, tutoring, and dance in the same building. IN THE SAME BUILDING. If you grew up in this city, you might not realize what a gift it is to have access to whatever interests your family.
Want to send your kid to a top-notch public school? Done. Have a child who might require extra care and attention? Got you covered. Want to send to a private school geared toward religion or STEM? Sure. Want to homeschool you children and be involved in a local co-op? Go for it.
There’s room for every style of learning in this big city.
Social Scene
Between traditional stadium concerts, musical performances, comedy shows, sports teams, and outdoor theaters, the social scene in this city doesn’t disappoint. Any night of the week is booming with opportunities for experiencing something completely new and different than what you’ve done before.
And also, can we talk about the fact that there is a month-long rodeo with entertainment every night!?

Food Scene in Houston
Travel almost anywhere outside of these parts and the food is a letdown.
Honestly, this could be a post all on its own. The food scene in this city is BOOMING. And we know food, being from South Louisiana and all. There is cuisine for everyone, and it has been our mission to get to as many new places as we can. I dabbled a bit with vegetarian and vegan eating and there are more dietary friendly restaurants than I could get to.
Even if you don’t think this city has a lot to offer as a whole, I argue there is very little to complain about when it comes to the food.
Hands-on Learning
While the zoo, museums, and libraries might not be unique to Houston they give me great love and admiration. Want to know something fascinating? My child has a preferred library. How incredible to have a four year old that has experienced so many libraries within the city that they have the privilege of picking a favorite. Let’s move on to the number of parks in this city. Neighborhood parks, “fancy” parks, parks with story time and crafts, parks with yoga, with sand pits, rock climbing, a splash pad, or a library. You name it, Houston has a park with it.
This city provides over and over again in hands-on learning and activities for the whole family.
Life-long residents might have something to say about the influx of outsiders to the city. As a transplant, we have nothing but appreciation for you, for this city, and for the opportunities provided here in Houston.
