Making donuts couldn’t have been more easy with this semi-homemade recipe. My kids would have made hundreds if they could but the amount that this recipe yielded was the perfect amount of donuts for my family of seven. It’s tasty, fun, and the icing possibilities are endless. Keep in mind that this is a no fuss version of donuts using canned biscuit dough so it will differ from your local donut shop. I really enjoy spending time with my kids in the kitchen and this is the perfect recipe to do just that. There isn’t any proofing yeast and waiting for it to rest. In this recipe you will find how to make the donuts in minutes and how to take the donut holes up a notch.
Ingredients
Donuts::
1 tube Refrigerated Biscuits 8 count
1 quart frying oil of choice
4 cups Powdered Sugar sifted
2-4 tablespoons milk warmed
1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 drop gel food coloring optional
Sprinkles and toppings of choice
Donut Holes::
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup Nutella
2-3 tablespoons warm milk
Steps to Making Donuts
Donuts::
1. Start by heating up your oil to 350 degrees. The temperature can fluctuate so a thermometer is super useful.
2. Using a one inch round cutter or anything that you can find at home to help punch out the center of your donut. Separate the donuts and the holes. You will fry the holes later.
3. Carefully place the donuts into the oil and let it cook for approximately 2 minutes before you flip it to the other side. Avoid turning your donuts too much. Remove the donuts once they look golden and drain it on a plate lined with paper towels.
4. Mix powdered sugar and warm milk to make your icing. Add in flavoring or coloring at this point. The icing should be thick enough to coat your donut but still easy to dip.
5. Add sprinkles and toppings immediately before the icing hardens.
Donut holes::
1. Reheat your oil and bring it back up to 350 degrees.
2. Drop all of your donuts holes into the oil and fry until golden. This will go quickly since the donuts are so small. Remove the donut holes and drain it on a paper towel.
3. In a bowl, mix the cinnamon and sugar. Drop the warm donut holes into the mixture and coat evenly. I placed it in a Tupperware so that my daughter could help shake them up.
4. In another bowl, whisk Nutella and warm milk until you get a dipping sauce. You may need to add more milk to thin it out or reheat at 15-20 second intervals to achieve the desired consistency. The cinnamon sugar donut holes will disappear in minutes and we love the added flavor that the Nutella brought.
