In some of my past posts, I have briefly touched on the fact that I was will always be a teacher.  And not just any old teacher…but a special education teacher.  I have taught all ages and all developmental levels, from preschoolers with mild developmental delays to young adults with severe special needs.  Dozens of students have walked in and out of my life, but each of them have touched my heart and left a mark on my soul.  They taught me more than I could have ever taught them, and I am a better person for all of those years I was able to spend in the classroom.  So when I founded Houston Moms Blog just a few months back, I knew that one of my goals was to shine a light on the special needs population in our town and provide an indispensable resource for their parents, advocates, and number one biggest fans.

Clear Lake Children's Center (1)

Clear Lake Children's Center (1)Like me, Dr. Becky Siekerski has always been drawn to working with both children and their families, and as a Licensed Psychologist, she has served in a number of different roles in both the public school system and private clinics.  She is passionate about helping parents in their quest to find the answers and support they have been searching for, and she loves finding ways to help children learn and grow.  But that is probably because she is a mom herself.  So she is able to empathize with the worries and concerns that come along with motherhood, and she can totally relate to the madness that comes along with splitting time between homework, school meetings, extracurriculars, and the occasional date night with the hubs.  Within the first few minutes of talking with her, it is obvious that she genuinely loves what she does at Clear Lake Children’s Center and strives to make our community a better place.  And if you ask me – she is doing a pretty fantastic job!

Clear Lake Children's Center (2)If you are a mom who has always suspected something isn’t quite right, let Clear Lake Children’s Center help you!  Dr. Becky may be able to reassure you that what you are experiencing is totally normal.  And if you work with her and find that it is in fact something more serious, she can be that trusted professional to guide you on the right course of action and help lead you to where you need to go.  Maybe it’s a passing phase, and one of their parenting workshops is just what you need to learn new skills and strategies for home.  Or together, you and her could decide whether an evaluation would help explore deeper concerns to rule out ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, learning difficulties, or other emotional and behavioral challenges.  If you are concerned about your child’s social skills, anxiety, or anger management skills, Clear Lake Children’s Center can work on that with your child through therapy too!  And if you are a mom with a child between the ages of 3-21 who is already receiving special education services through the school district, then she can help demystify that whole overwhelming system with an educational consultation as well.  No matter how big or small or simple or complex, Dr. Becky and Clear Lake Children’s Center will help you and your child get the exact support that you need!

I know it can be scary to take that first step and call.  But  if you do, you will be sooo glad that you did.  Because early detection and intervention is absolutely key!  And Dr. Becky doesn’t bite.  We promise.

Kelly is the founder of Houston Moms Blog and has lived in this beautiful city nearly all of her life. She has a degree in education from Texas State University and was honored to teach special education for eight years to some of the cutest little kiddos you could ever meet. While teaching, Kelly met Cody – a tall drink of water and country boy to the core – and together, they fell in love, got married, and decided to start a family. In March 2011, they welcomed Hayes into the world, a silly but smart little boy with a story you have to read to believe. And in April 2013, their family was complete with the addition of Hadley, a super gregarious and oh-so-cute baby girl. Now, Kelly devotes her days to caring for her own little ones…and would not trade this new job of hers for the world! In her not-so-spare time, Kelly loves meeting up with her girlfriends for margaritas, failing miserably at Pinterest projects, and exploring this big old city with her two favorite little side-kicks in tow.

  1. This is GREAT to know! I often have families {mostly worried moms} contacting me to ask where they can go near them. I’m in Sugar Land, so it’s good to know a place in Clear Lake to suggest to these very stressed and very concerned moms and dads. I work with preschoolers with autism and behavior/social issues in SL and surrounding areas, but I DO hear from parents with kids already school age that I can refer to the Clear Lake Children’s Center. Again, this is awesome to know about!
