Summer, for me, is all about finding that sweet spot – the perfect read, the perfect snack, the perfect guilty pleasure…you get the picture. After last year and the summer that never really was, summer 2021 is like a slow revelation. A moment to savor, day by day and minute by minute. I have taken to heart the lyrics written by George Gershwin, “Summertime, and the living is easy.” This is a no fuss, a bit indulgent and oh, so sweet summer experience. Nothing fancy but, definitely enjoyable. These are a few of my current favorite things.
Sweet Snack
When I think of gourmet popcorn, I immediately think “Chicago Mix”- caramel and cheese mixed popcorn. Trust me, if you say Chicago Mix to anyone who has spent any time at all in Chicago, they will know exactly what you’re talking about. Anyway, it’s one of my favorite snack indulgences to enjoy on road trips, while watching a movie, or while sitting on my patio doing absolutely nothing. Let me tell you, if you don’t feel like having a popcorn tin flown in from the Windy City, head straight to HEB or Central Market and grab a bag of Central Market Sweet and Cheese Mix popcorn. It’s the perfect balance of sweet and salty and I’m not gonna lie – I don’t share. It’s that good!
Sweet Drinks
I’m not really an energy drink person but…Alani Nu Energy Drinks are not like the rest. First of all, they are actually refreshing and the flavors are really tasty {Mimosa is my favorite}. All varieties are vegan and gluten free, no added sugar and only 10 calories each. So, you don’t even feel bad that this is your drink of choice.

Here’s a little known fact about me – I LOVE magazines! Fashion magazines, home decorating magazines, cooking magazines, lifestyle magazines. I love all kinds of magazines and I consider them to be road trip necessities. Recently, in preparation for our family drive to Atlanta, I picked up the latest issue of Ayesha Curry’s magazine, Sweet July. As the wife of Golden State Warriors point guard, Stephen Curry, Ayesha has made a name for herself not only as a restauranteur, but also in the fashion and beauty industry. Her star has ascended and she is literally everywhere, from her own line of home decor and kitchenware to makeup spokesperson. Sweet July is a perfect representation of all of those things, presenting the newest lifestyle trends, but with an authentic flavor that belongs to it’s founder. The articles are well written and the features are unique, yet relatable for readers. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next issue.
Sweet Desserts
When you think of summer desserts, ice cream has to be at the top of the list. It certainly is my husband’s favorite and it never lasts very long here in our house. Obviously, an ice cream maker is a no brainer, right? Right! The Cuisinart Pure Indulgence Frozen Yogurt Sorbet & Ice Cream Maker has to be the easiest {and fastest} way to make homemade ice cream. You simply put all of your ingredients in, turn it on and walk away. The machine does the rest. It makes about two quarts of ice cream in about a half hour to forty five minutes, and is easy to clean and store. Additionally, it’s super cute so you don’t mind leaving it on your counter for easy access. Best purchase of the summer, so far.
