From Pregnancy to Motherhood, You Will Need Support

We have partnered with Legacy Community Health, but the words of this post are all ours.

If you are pregnant right now, you know what a magical and exhausting time is coming your way. Sure, you can eat burritos and fudge {Don’t judge pregnant me!} without a concern, but soon the time will come that the nurse hands you a baby and says, “Good luck!” {Ok, I’m not sure they ever told me “Good luck” but I certainly needed the luck} The journey from pregnancy to parenthood can be a joyous and stressful time for many women.

Legacy Community Health is here to help you through your motherhood transition. To help patients on that journey, Legacy developed an initiative focusing on that crucial period when a woman finds out she is pregnant, through her pregnancy and delivery, and the baby’s first year of life. The program is offered to all expectant moms at each of Legacy’s ten locations providing obstetrics care.

Pregnancy is such an exciting time for a woman, but it can also be scary and hormonal. No amount of baby books can replace the actual knowledge of your OBGYN. Your first trimester is full of highs and lows. Your second trimester is supposed to be “the easy one” and your third trimester… Oh, the third trimester. The time of your pregnancy that you go into your doctor’s office with a myriad of things that are wrong with you and your doctor basically tells you to “Suck it up, buttercup.” Only you know how you are really feeling and what you are really going through, but you do know that you need help. No amount of self-care can get you through the emotions you are feeling.

The program through Legacy Community Health is called OB2Pedi and helps expectant moms through the many milestones that come with pregnancy. This is a very important period in an expectant moms’ life and one that may be filled with lots of questions. The goal of the OB2Pedi program is to guide expectant moms through a healthy pregnancy and delivery into pediatric care for their babies.  Legacy’s obstetric and pediatric teams work together to coordinate a seamless transition between the different phases of medical care.

“Data shows that a healthy pregnancy with regular prenatal care ensures a healthier delivery and start to a baby’s life,” said Dr. Vian Nguyen, Chief Medical Officer and former director of OB/GYN services at Legacy Community Health.

Through educational materials, the OB2Pedi program prepares expectant moms on what to expect during each week of their pregnancies. That includes how to handle common symptoms like fatigue and morning sickness, or more serious concerns like shortness of breath or high fever.

After the baby arrives—congratulations! A whole new set of amazing motherhood challenges await you. From breastfeeding to car seats, to diaper rashes and crying, you will have questions constantly. The OB2Pedi program helps transition parents to the Legacy pediatrics team which is often in the same clinic as their obstetrician – and the postpartum phase by offering classes on breastfeeding and car seat usage, and behavioral health services for diagnosis and treatment of postpartum depression.

Motherhood can be a confusing time. For me, I threw myself into taking care of my new baby and figuring out how to be a Mom that I forgot to take care of myself. My friend forgot about herself so much that she fainted in the shower. Legacy can comprehensively care for you and your baby to make sure that both of you are successful and healthy during your transitions.

Babies are amazing. They turn into toddlers and waddlers, walking and talking, until they are heading off to Kindergarten and college a week later {it seems}. You will have questions about so many things new baby related, postpartum health related, next pregnancy related, and beyond, that there are so many benefits to having a comprehensive health care plan where they talk to each other and work together. Having both health care systems in the same clinic is an added bonus!

Through the OB2Pedi program, Legacy’s obstetric and pediatric teams partner with patients throughout their entire motherhood journey.
