Hidden Oyster: Family Fun at Oyster Creek Park

family having a picnic at Oyster Creek ParkIn the Houston area, there is always something to do, including many fantastic parks. A favorite is Oyster Creek Park, located in Sugarland off Highway 6. It is a great spot for a picnic and photo ops. Grab your family, some snacks, and a scooter or bike, and hit the road for a picnic and some fresh air.

Located at 4033 State Highway 6 South, the park is open from sunrise to sunset, with the trail open from sunrise to 10pm.

Convenient Facilities and Amenities

When you have kids, you quickly learn which parks offer the best facilities and amenities for an enjoyable family day or playdate. Let’s start off with the most important requirements for moms venturing out anywhere with their kids: The 111 acre Oyster Creek Park has a real restroom and plenty of parking. It also has picnic tables with grills, water fountains, benches, and Emergency call boxes along Oyster Creek Trail. There is also an amphitheater that can be rented for birthday parties and other events.

Note for moms: Oyster Creek Park does NOT have a play structure, so be sure to bring bikes, scooters, ride-on toys, and other toys for kids.

What to See and Do

The entrance to Oyster Creek Park is a bridge that goes over waters filled with tons of small and large turtles ready to snack and feast on goodies brought by park patrons. As you come across the bridge, you see a breathtaking pond waterfall like structure that’s great for photo ops and is a good picnic backdrop. I always run into someone having a photo shoot at this park when I visit. I myself had a romantic Valentine’s Day Picnic at Oyster Creek Park a few years ago with my husband. It was so much fun and “fancy”. We were set up right off of the water which allowed for a cool breeze on a hot February day.

After you get past the first waterfall and walk in the park you will be met by several bronze statues that are free-standing and some are even sitting on benches that you can sit next to and take pictures with. If you’re at the park more for a workout there’s a 3 mile labeled hike and bike trail that goes behind the park so you can get all of your steps in.  Be sure to watch out for nature’s creatures. There are a few signs that remind you to be aware of your surroundings and to look out for alligators and other animals. I love how the park trail winds up and down so you have good scooter slopes to catch speed, which my son loves.

Where to Eat

boy at koi pond at RazoosA great option when visiting Oyster Creek Park is to pack a blanket and picnic lunch. There is plenty of green space and shaded areas to enjoy a leisurely meal. But if eating on the ground isn’t your thing, there are several great restaurants nearby to eat at before or after your visit.

This past weekend my husband, son, mom and I did just that. We grabbed dinner at Razoo’s Cajun Cafe and sat on the patio to enjoy the excellent 80 degree Houston weather. Razoo’s is a favorite family spot of ours. The patio at Razoo’s surrounds a big “pond” that is full of Catfish and Koi Fish. My son always gobbles up his food so he can feed the fish.

Other family friendly restaurants in the area include Ninfas, Live Oak Grill (which does have a playground!), Willie’s Grill and Icehouse, and family favorite Torchy’s Tacos.

This Houston area “Hidden Oyster” is a great park to go to for a laid-back or active family fun day.  Make a plan to visit soon with your crew!
