Amateur Acting on Christmas Eve

I come from what most would consider a pretty large family. Growing up we always spent Christmas Eve with my mom’s side of the family and Christmas day with my dads. Some of my most treasured memories as a child are these special moments with our family. But I have to say that some of the most hilarious and fun memories come from our Christmas Eve skits we put on every year! This tradition started with what my Mimi says is “the first baby” {or grandchild}. When the tradition first started, each immediate family was to create a skit, get all of their costumes, music, and any other props ready to go, and be prepared to perform on Christmas Eve. No one was able to get out of the skit. It did not matter how old you were, you were expected to perform. My grandparents, great aunts, teenagers of the family, and even babies – everyone was included. And let me tell you, these skits are awful! We are not a family of actors, singers, or thespians of any kind…but we have had a blast putting on our productions.

As time has gone on, we have passed on this fun to just the kiddos of the family. Each year we get our baby Jesus lined up {I have provided a female Jesus for the fam for the last 2 years, but this year we are using a baby doll!}, our shephard and wise men in place, a beautiful Angel, and of course – Mary and Joseph. We take this time to tell the Christmas story and give a visual and fun reminder to our kids of the TRUE meaning of Christmas.

I have to admit, I have been a Scrooge about skits over the last few years. But after reminiscing and looking over all of these fun pictures from our past, I think my love for the skits has been rekindled! Maybe this year I will even jump in with the kids and get my acting on!
