A Houston Mom’s Guide to April

Peeps! {See what I did there?!} Can you believe it is APRIL already? Where has the time gone this “spring”… which actually feels way more like summer. Time to break out the shorts, flip flops, and sunscreen and enjoy all that our Bayou City has to offer this month. From festivals to all things bunny and Earth Day celebrations, there’s no lack of activities for you and your family to enjoy!

April 1st & 2nd | 10:30am – 6pm :: Houston Children’s Festival

Sponsored by McDonald’s, this is the largest children’s festival in the United States! Over the past 28 years, they have raised $5.4 million dollars for children over this annual 2 day event. Enjoy everything from 4 stages of live entertainment, over 300 different activities, and fabulous concessions, all in the heart of downtown Houston. $12 tickets at the gate or $10 online {children 3 and under are free}.

April 1st | 10am – Noon :: April Pool’s Day with Memorial Hermann

Head out to Katy for this free and super informative event regarding water safety. You and your children will learn about everything from bathtub safety, life jacket fitting, CPR, and more. Also on hand will be the Chick-Fil-A cow and Bobber the water safety dog. First 200 families that visit the demonstrations will get a complimentary gift bag.

April 1st | 1 – 5pm :: Earth Day Celebration in Sugar Land

A fabulous day of family-friendly and earth-friendly fun! This event will focus on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and ROCK earth day with over 30 exhibits and activities. Don’t forget to bring your used cell phones and eyeglasses to be recycled as well. And if you are in need of some paper shredding of home documents, they can help you with that too!

April 1st | 10am – 5pm :: Power Rangers at The Children’s Museum of Houston

Go, go, Power Rangers! Following up on the release of Saban’s Power Rangers movie released on March 24th, meet your faves at the Brown Auditorium. Children will be able to create special PR masks and belts, as well as have picture-taking opportunities.

April 1st | 5 – 8pm :: Katy Sip ‘n Stroll

Need a fun date idea or a night out with the girls? Then the sip ‘n stroll is the place to be! Discover new wines, craft beer, fantastic feasting, and live music all beautifully set in the backdrop of Katy’s Villagio Town Center. Even better? All proceeds go to benefit The Ballard House, a Cinco Charity that provides a warm and safe environment for those undergoing treatment for a severe medical condition and/or their families. April 2nd | 11am – 6pm :: Houston Baby + Kid Show

In partnership with Baby and Kids 1st, head out to the Bayou City Event Center for a day of sales and exhibits for expectant moms, new parents, and families. Preview the latest and greatest in gear, baby products, seminars, fashion shows, and more. Grab your tickets and special add-ons.

April 3rd | 10am – 3pm :: Sensory Friendly Day at The Children’s Museum

This event is specifically for our friends on the autism spectrum and/or with sensory processing disorders at the Children’s Museum of Houston. Enjoy a less crowded environment, light and sound reduction, and designated quiet rooms. They will also provide weighted lap pads, wheelchairs, ear defenders, sunglasses, and more to provide the best possible experience for your child. To the delight of all, miniature therapy horses will also be on hand along with dance lessons exclusively by the Houston Ballet. Free for museum members and just $5 for the general public.

April 5th – 9th | {check website for times} :: Disney On Ice “Follow Your Heart”

Who doesn’t love Disney on Ice? They return this year to NRG Stadium with their special performance of “Follow Your Heart” featuring all of your Disney favorites! From Dory and company to Joy, Sadness, and the rest of the Emotions, several Disney princesses, and even appearances from the Toy Story gang, this riveting show brings warm hearts to the cold ice. Grab your tickets now!

April 7th | 10am – 5pm :: Houston Railfest 2017

Head out to the Rosenberg Railroad Museum for their 10th annual Railfest! Take in their model train layout show, enjoy the open house of the museum, bounce on their railroad theme inflatables, and take a gander at real live trains from their special observation platform. Admission is $8, with children under 2 free. Speedpass your tickets.

April 7th – 20th | 10am – 6pm :: Sensational Senses WonderWeek at the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center

From hearing a favorite song, to smelling fresh spring flowers, to tasting a yummy cookie, our five senses strengthen our experiences and determine how we see the world.  The Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center celebrates the different abilities that make each child and their senses unique during their Sensational Senses Wonderweek.  Hear, see, smell, taste and touch the outside world through tons of “sense”ational, hands-on activities.

April 8th & 9th | {check website for times} :: Annie The Musical Live at Jones Hall

This iconic and beloved musical returns to Jones Hall featuring all of the favorite songs including “It’s a Hard Knocked Life” and “Tomorrow.” It’s the perfect musical for all generations who will relate to the beloved orphan’s tale. Find tickets here!

April 8th | 8 – 10:30am :: Bunny Run in Tomball

Tis the season for all things rabbit! Grab your best bunnies and head out to Tomball for their city’s annual 5K run and 1K family walk. Don’t forget your bling — prizes will be given for the best bunny ears! Hop to it, ladies, and enjoy some time in the beautiful historic district of our neighbors to the north.

April 8th | 6 – 9pm :: Viva Frida Festival 2017

Hosted by The Hardy and Nance Studios in the East End, your family won’t want to miss this eclectic 12th annual gathering celebrating the life of Latin America’s most important artist. Feeling daring? Don’t miss out on the adult look alike contest at 8pm! Loteria will also be in play that night as well.

April 8th | 7:45 – 10pm :: Sugar Land Town Square’s Movie Under the Moon

A monthly favorite in the Sugar Land area! Take in a showing of Storks while enjoying the perfect ambiance of the acclaimed Town Square. Blankets and lawn chairs are welcomed. Make sure to grab a bite to eat or snag a drink from one of the many restaurants in the area. This is a free event and open to the public.

April 14th & 15th | 10am – 2pm :: EggTivities with The Woodlands Children’s Museum

Kick off the Easter weekend with our friends at The Woodlands Children’s Museum. For just $6, your child will be able to dye Easter eggs, make bunny masks, and decorate egg baskets. Don’t forget your camera! Rumor has it the Easter Bunny will be hopping around as well.

April 15th | 10am – 4pm :: HobbyFest 2017

Hobby Airport presents their 25th annual family-friendly and FREE HobbyFest! From a KidsZone to facepainting, games, prizes, music, and more, it’s a perfect event to learn more about Hobby Airport and support the area residents. Canned good donations are encouraged and welcomed. First 1,500 attendees will receive a free lunch!

April 15th | 10am – 4pm :: SpringWorld International Festival 

This Easter weekend tradition draws thousands to Discovery Green each year … and for good reason. Their goal is to promote education, information, and engage in the love of international cultures through food, music, and of course, fun! Proceeds from this free festival go to support year-round arts education programs in the Greater Houston area.

April 15th | 3pm :: HTX Dessert Crawl in River Oaks

Craving some sweet treats at some of Houston’s finest dessert establishments to start off the weekend? This family-friendly crawl is for you! Watch as more than 15,000 students ages 6-18 compete with their custom-made robots at FIRST Championship. At this “Super Bowl of robotics,” families can watch student teams complete game-style challenges with their custom robots as well as attend the Innovation Faire to meet and interact with organizations like LEGO, Disney, Qualcomm, NRG, and more.

April 20th | 7:05pm :: Opening Day of Sugar Land Skeeters vs. Bridgeport Bluefish

Kick off spring nights with the Skeeters at the beautiful Constellation Field! Such a family-friendly and super affordable way to spend an evening at the ballpark. If you’ve never checked out a Skeeters game, now is the time! From their outdoor ice house to specific children’s play areas and splash pad, there will be no lack of entertainment. Opening night will also feature a replica 2016 Championship Giveaway along with a magnet schedule giveaway. Let’s go Skeeters!

April 22nd | 9am – Noon :: Shipley Do-Nuts Dash

Our sweet friends {see what we did there?!} at Shipley’s are back with their 3rd annual Do-Nuts Dash, benefiting Kids’ Meals, a 501(c)3 non-profit that provides lunches to young children in poverty. The two mile non-competitive course features donut themed obstacles along the way. At the finish, expect even more delish do-nuts and milk, along with a frothy brew from 8th Wonder Brewery for the adult competitors. Snag your tickets here.

April 22nd | 10am – Noon :: Katy Area Safety Fest

For all of the firetruck and ambulance lovers out there, this event is for you! Join over 20+ agencies that serve the Katy area for this fun and super educational event out at Katy Mills Mall. Check out Life Flight helicopters, live safety demonstrations, inflatable area for the kiddos, and multiple food vendors.

April 22nd | 10am – 6pm :: Earth Day Bash at The Children’s Museum of Houston

Practice the three “R’s” – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in the most perfect way at the Children’s Museum. Inspire your children to celebrate the wonders of our planet Earth and inspire their appreciation for our environment. Multiple activities will be available including creating environmentally friendly artwork and creating their own recycling song.

April 22nd | 10am – 2pm :: Celebrate Earth Day in Pearland

We love this 21st annual FREE event in Pearland created to raise awareness and educate the greater community on environmental responsibility. Learn more about respecting our land, conservation, recycling, and more. Take in a beautiful butterfly garden and enjoy multiple educational booths and activities.

April 22nd | 6:05pm :: Sugar Land Skeeters vs. Bridgeport Bluefish

Saturday night ball under the stars? Yes, please! Even better is this night will have a special Skeeters hat giveaway. This rousing musical rendition exploring the Dr. Seuss favorite of Green Eggs and Ham is not to be missed! Through song and dance, your children will be drawn into this fun and mystical world. Please note, all children must have a ticket, including those under the age of 2.

April 29th | 11am – 8pm :: Throwdown Texas Burger and Music Fest

Spring means it’s time to fire up those grills, and this 2nd annual event hosted at the beautiful Town Creek park in The Woodlands will not disappoint! Expect live music, burger sampling, shopping, food trucks and other vendors, and a special KidZone. Bonus? Kids under age 14 are FREE, and each adult $14 ticket includes 4 burger samples. April 29th & 30th | Noon – Midnight {Saturday}; Noon – 6pm {Sunday} :: Texas Crawfish & Music Festival

Head to Old Town Spring and Preservation Park for this Texas meets Louisiana fest for all. One of the largest and longest running festivals in Houston, enjoy amazing musical talents, local artists and vendors, petting zoo, pony rides for the kids, and of course, the finest crawfish straight out of Southeast Louisiana. Hint :: buy your tickets on Groupon for a reduced rate.

Meagan Clanahan
Meagan is a Dallas native who has lived in the Katy area for over a decade. She kicked a soccer ball all the way to Louisiana to attend college at her family’s alma mater of LSU, where she promptly fell in love with a Texas Aggie in Baton Rouge for an internship. After swimming back to Texas following Hurricane Katrina, Matt and Meagan fell in love with the Houston area and now couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Following several years of infertility, their miracle twins Ryan and Quinn were born in June of 2010.
