How Spring Cleaning Can Improve Your Health

Spring cleaning does wonders for your mental health, but it can also improve your physical health!  Here’s how:

How Spring Cleaning Can Improve Your Health1. A good dusting and vacuuming of those hard-to-reach places means you’ll likely be removing a decent amount of dust and allergens that may have built up over the winter months.  The result: cleaner, fresher air, which means you’ll be breathing easier!

2. If you’re doing the spring cleaning yourself, all of that walking around the house will add up. And, did you know that 30 minutes of vacuuming can burn up to 111 calories?!  A clean house and a workout – It’s a win-win!

3. Studies have shown that those who go to sleep in a made bed are 19 percent more likely to sleep well.  Additionally, 75% of people sleep better when their sheets are clean and smell fresh. For more information on the importance of sleep and how to get more of it, check out this Health Xplained podcast episode.

4. Spring cleaning is often a time of reset, not just within our homes but in other aspects of our lives. A study conducted by the University of Minnesota found that those who live in clean and orderly spaces are more likely to choose healthier snack options.  So, if you haven’t been motivated to eat well lately, try doing some cleaning. 😉

5. We often overlook cleaning out appliances like toasters or even washing machines as frequently as we should.  However, Spring cleaning is a great time to do so, as a build-up of food or exposure to moisture for extended periods may result in mold or bacteria growth, which could lead to illness.

6. Be honest: How many times have you stepped on a Lego lately?  Get your kiddos involved in Spring cleaning and have them pick up their toys *cough* tripping hazards *cough*.

7. Don’t forget to add the medicine cabinet to your to-do list.  Throwing out expired medications and restocking essentials is a must.

Happy Spring Cleaning, everyone!
