Is Your Child Safe in the Car? 3 Questions to Ask to Be Sure

We are thankful to have partnered with Patrick Daniel Law on this post, but all thoughts and opinions are our own. We are excited for the generous giveaway offer so please be sure to check out of the details below.

September 20th-26th is Child Passenger Safety Week and we know there is nothing important than your child’s safety. During this week we want to highlight how to keep your child safe, as well as what to do in case of an emergency. The unknowns are scary, but it is important to prepare for them. I have two little ones and we have been dealing with car seats and booster seats for seven years. I take this time, every year, to look at our seats, the arrangement of them, and to make sure they are in the right seats for their height/weight.

Patrick Daniel Law is making sure you are keeping your kids safe by asking us these three questions about car seats::

Do I have the right car seat?

My oldest is tall for her age and was able to switch from the high back booster to the regular booster quickly, but my youngest is short for her age. I’ve checked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s car seat recommendations to make sure that she should be in the high back booster. This year is the first year I have been able to get her out of the 5 point harness and into the high back booster, something I wouldn’t have done {no matter how much she begs} if she wasn’t ready for this. It was also super helpful when we decided to turn them around, from back facing to forward facing. You don’t want to switch too early, since back facing is the best for their little bodies.

Is your car seat registered?

Now that you know if you have the right car seat, you want to make sure they are registered with your seat’s manufacturer. This is super important to keep up to date on recalls and safety notices. A few years ago we had a recall on our Graco buckle. I sent in the information and a new buckle was mailed to us within the week. This is a great way to make sure your car seats are perfect for your babies and the safest they can be.

Is it time to upgrade my car seat?

Did you know that your car seats have an expiration date? Some are only a few years from the day they were manufactured and others are 10 years. I wanted to donate my daughter’s infant seat to my sister when she had her first, but it was expired. If it is expired, you need to upgrade your car seat. Be up to date with your seat and make sure you have the right one for your car.

Visit a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician in your community to double-check that it’s correctly installed and that you’re using it correctly. Getting your car seats checked can only help make sure your kids are safe and help you a tiny bit with the unknowns. These resources are always available, not just during Child Passenger Safety Week.

If Something Happened

Children can be hurt in any situation, big or small. Their bones are smaller and more susceptible to injury. If you or your child is injured in a car crash, be sure to reach out to the child injury lawyers at Patrick Daniel Law. In the off chance your child is injured in a car crash, their car accident lawyers will fully investigate the accident and build a case on your behalf against all liable parties.

This year has been a testament to the phrase “Expect the Unexpected” and it’s a perfect time to make sure our kids are the safest they can be in the car. Use this Child Passenger Safety Week to check and double check your car seats, their registration, and their expiration.
