Top 5 Kid Friendly Coffee Spots in the Heights

I’ll admit that I didn’t become a coffee drinker until I became a mother. I needed a cup of Joe to keep me going at work, especially if the baby had a hard time going to bed the night before. My son is now 6, so I am well versed on where a mom can go get a daily dose of caffeine with her kids. I live in the Heights and when heading out with my son, there is a lot I keep in mind: good coffee, parking, restroom situation, and kid friendly snack options. I’m going to dive into my top 5 spots to get coffee in the Heights area that I believe hit all the key points I need, as a mom, to make my coffee trip a success. These places never get old and I feel any mom would love to go again and again.

Tenfold Coffee

Open 7am- 6pm every day
101 Aurora St, 77008

Tenfold is Latin-owned and has one of my key requirements, parking. It’s hard to find places with good parking in the Heights. Tenfold shares a parking lot, but there are plenty of spaces open to all patrons of either business. The coffee is superb! My fiance would drink coffee with an insane amount of sugar. When I brought him a drip coffee from Tenfold for the first time, he sipped it- no sugar, no cream, just black. He finished the entire drip coffee without adding a single thing. He said it was that good! They make several different blends and you can buy their beans, which they roast themselves, in house. And their house is stunning! The entire space is saturated with greenery. I swear I breathe better when I’m inside this coffee shop.

To top it off, Tenfold has a babyccino for your little one to enjoy. What’s in the babyccino? It’s steamed milk that sometimes comes with a sprinkle of cocoa powder. You can ask to forego the cocoa if you wish. It’s $1.50, but getting a matching pink pastel Tenfold cup with your kid is priceless! They also have pop-ups from different small business bakeries. Currently, you can find baked goods from Love Croissants HTX! There’s a stellar assortment of croissants. For moms with littles in diapers, they have a changing table in the unisex restrooms.

EQ Heights

Open 7am- 7pm every day
1030 Heights Blvd, 77008

This Heights coffee shop is along the Paul Carr Jogging Trail. If you want to get some exercise in before your morning coffee, this place is perfect. Park along Heights Boulevard and hit the trail running and drop in at EQ. I see a lot of parents doing this. If you’re like me, you can skip the trail, park in their parking lot located behind their building and mosey on in. They have a great cup of coffee that will keep you up all day. I love that though it’s a home transformed into a business, they still have elements that make you feel like you are in your own living room. There is a wall of board games you may feel free to grab and play.

Aside from coffee, the pastries here are divine! They have lemon bars, croissants, macarons, and muffins to name a few. They also have a breakfast and lunch menu! There is plenty of seating inside which includes cozy couches, but there is a gorgeous outdoor patio they revamped recently. I know it’s Houston and the weather is not always ideal, but it’s a pretty shaded patio area, so it’s not bad at all even on scorching summer days. This cafe also has a changing table in their unisex restroom.

Kolache Shoppe

Closed Monday, Open Tue-Fri, 6:30am- 12:30pm; Saturday & Sunday, 7am- 1pm
1031 Heights Blvd., 77008

I know this might be an odd one to add to a list of favorite Heights coffee places, but I would be remiss not to include it. This location is convenient because it has a drive-thru! When you want local, quality coffee and do not want to get out of the car, Kolache Shoppe delivers that with their Boomtown Coffee. (Boomtown is another coffee shop in the Heights that is fabulous to check out, but maybe not with your kids in tow. The parking is a bit of a challenge.) So when you have your littles and are in a rush, you can head to the Kolache Shoppe drive- thru. They have seasonal lattes, which I personally always enjoy. Currently, they have a Biscoff latte. Yum! I can’t wait for October to roll around, so I can enjoy their pumpkin spice latte.

Don’t sleep on the Kolache Shoppe’s kolaches! My 6-year-old is a picky eater, and he will devour their bacon and cheese kolaches. They have a great array of choices, so be sure to check out their menu and see what you fancy. I am sure they have a kolache for everyone, sweet or savory. Tip: Go early! The drive-thru does get very busy, but for a good reason.

Asch Building

Open Mon- Wed, 7am- 7pm; Thurs & Fri, 7am-8pm; Sat, 8am-8pm; Sun 8am-6pm
825 Studewood St, 77007

This business is separated into three sections: Market, Home, and Atelier. Let’s start with where you get your coffee- Market. When you walk in through Market there is a coffee shop feel. I tried an iced French Toast latte recently and every sip was better than the last. You can order your coffee, breakfast tacos, or baked goods and walk around to their mini grocer while you wait for your order. They have adorable little shopping carts for your kids to do some shopping with you. They have a selection of fruits, veggies, meats, sauces, and more for sale.

If you head into the Home section, you will find candles, fresh flowers, other home goods and a vibrant sitting area. Atelier is their clothing section. Asch Building sells their own brand of clothing, ASCH 146, as well as carefully curated women’s fashion items. Moms everywhere, you can get coffee, groceries, and a new outfit in one trip! If you stay a while, you can sit inside or outside. They have a patio in the front of the building as well as the back of the building. Their restrooms do not have a changing table for littles, but if your child is potty trained, the restrooms do have a stool so they can easily reach the sink to wash their hands.

Tips: Bring your own coffee cup and get 10 cents off every day. Tuesday- Thursday get florals from The Velvet Petunia half off.

Active Passion

Open 6:30am- 4pm, every day
803 Usener St, 77009

Active Passion has such a lively presence. Their space is filled with hints of orange throughout its decor. As a whole, this coffee shop encourages everyone to be active and, in that pursuit, they organize events that will get your heart pumping. Some days you might catch a sea of bikes outside getting ready for a communal bike ride. Be sure to check out what they have in store next!

They have great coffee, and a brunch/ lunch menu. Avocado toast, protein bars, bagels, or croissants are some of their delicious offerings. What I love most about this coffee shop for the kids is that their plates have a cute little monster on them. It’s always entertaining for the littles to see a friendly and silly face on their plates when they’re eating. They have plenty of healthy options for your kids, including sweet treats! They open bright and early so if you need an extra early start, this place is perfect.

They have a shared parking lot that again, has plenty of spots for everyone. Good thing I found this place after my son was potty trained as they do not have a changing table available in their restroom. Keep that in mind if you decide to try them out and have a little one in diapers.

I hope that the moms out there find these descriptions of kid friendly coffee spots in the Heights helpful. There’s a lot to say and behold at all of these establishments. If you know another great place to get coffee in the Heights area with kids, fill me in! I love trying new places.
