Montrose is a residential and business neighborhood located in the heart of Houston. This area is demographically diverse with renovated mansions, bungalows, cottages, and a few quirky businesses. Montrose is home of a number of artist and musician communities, as well as a strong LGBT community. There are also a few museums in that area, like the Menil Collection.

Montrose doesn’t have traditional neighborhoods, like some of the surrounding areas do, Neighborhoods.com still has you covered with great info about Montrose. This is a great place to start to find out more about these neighborhoods and to find a house.

Why Moms Love it

Moms love Montrose because of its funkiness! Montrose gives your family art and culture within walking distance while allowing for a small-town charm to soak in. The distance to fun Houston activities and family-friendly places can’t be beat!

Local Family Favorites :: {Playgrounds, sports, activities, parks}

At HMB, we love family-friendly activities. If it’s hot outside {because, it’s HOUSTON}, we recommend these indoor play places and these awesome splash padsWe also love taking care of ourselves. We have compiled a list of mommy-favorite fitness classes around town that can help you with self care.

  • Houston Zoo– For ALL Houston families, we highly recommend a yearly membership. The cost covers approximately 2 visits and most families go year-round. There are numerous family-friendly members-only events throughout the year, as well as discounted carousel rides and early admission on certain days of the month. Also, a Houston Zoo membership gives you free or discounted entry to zoos across the country.
  • Houston Natural Science Museum– The Science Museum is awesome! From the dinosaur exhibit, to the Butterfly exhibit, to the Planetarium and 3D movies in the Wortham Center, the Museum impresses us every time. We love the newly renovated Weiss Energy Hall, the Texas animal exhibits, the gemstones, and more! You also get membership to the Science Museum in Sugar Land and the George Observatory as a part of your yearly membership.
  • Houston Children’s Museum– The coolest part of the Children’s Museum is not the permanent exhibits. Those are super cool, but the coolest part is their special exhibits and their special events. Their goal is to educate our youth through fun and they definitely go above and beyond with the $12 entry fee. Other reasons to go include Kidtropolis, the city run by kids, the toddler area, and the super fun science and engineering areas. The yearly membership is also good at the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center. You also have free or discounted access to other children’s museums around the country.
  • Hermann Park is perfect for your outdoor loving kids! Whether you want to feed the ducks, use paddle boats, or roll down the hill outside Miller Outdoor Theatre, Hermann Park is perfect. Bring a picnic along, and make time to ride the train! While you are there, check out the new Centennial Gardens! Parking can be a bit tricky in this area on the weekends, so plan ahead.
  • The calendar is jam-packed with fun events, festivals, performances, and more! This park has made our list of the BEST Parks in Houston!
  • Houston Public Libraries boast quite a few family friendly activities. Find your closest location here. Your kids will love the library and all of its FREE fun things to do. A few of us may even want to move into it! A lot of neighborhoods even boast Free Little Libraries that can help your kid keep their love of reading alive.

Childcare and Schools

We know finding great child care and schools is a daunting task.  There are hundreds of great day care options in this area, but finding the right one for your family takes work. For grades K-12, the area is zoned to HISD and parents should research carefully how to navigate the HISD schools.Montrose also has a few great private school options, like the Annunciation Orthodox School and the Harris School. There are also many charter schools across Houston, like YES Prep and Harmony Schools. Montrose is also home to the University of St. Thomas, as well as in close proximity to Rice University, U of H, TSU, HCC, and the UT Health Science Center.

Perfect Date Night/Staycation

Mommy breaks like date nights, an occasional brunch, and staycations are an important part of self care.

A few Montrose area restaurants are on our list of the 30 Most Family Friendly Houston Patios and our list of Family Friendly Restaurants around Houston. We even know the most kid friendly breweries in this area. Interested in bringing your own alcohol and saving a bit of money? Check out our list of BYOB restaurants around town! To top your evening off, check out one of the Top Ten Ice Cream Shops in Houston!

We feel comfortable “peacing-out” and leaving our kiddos in the trustworthy hands of Best Buds Babysitting, knowing they will be taken care of {especially after we pick up one of the best pizzas in the area for everyone to enjoy}. They are happy. We are happy. Everyone wins!
