Throughout my professional office career (prior to being a professional mom, of course), one task I always loved making time for was professional development. However, I never really thought of it much after I decided to stay home with our kids but now, more than ever, I fee like I am in need of some parental professional development.
As a parent, it’s natural for us to look back on our childhood and compare it to that of our own children’s experience. And lately, I’ve really been reflecting, thinking about how I was raised and applying that to my parenting. I know things have changed for our generation who are now parents, with more research being published, trends on parenting and specifically discipline changing often.
I struggle to want to read a thought-provoking and serious research-based book at the end of the day when I have just had about enough of “it all” so I’ve been leaning more towards social media accounts, podcasts and audio books to get some new insights. Listening gives me the opportunity to multi-task while getting some up to date information and suggestions on parenting.
And with so many resources available at our fingertips, it can be overwhelming to know who to trust and where to get the best information related to your specific situation.
Professional Development for Parents
I was really excited to learn about a local resource that is free and open to the public through St. Thomas Episcopal School’s Online Parenting Education series. It is a live webinar format, where busy moms and dads can listen and ask questions to a diverse group of experts – often during the lunch break or after the little ones are in bed.
The Online Parent Education speakers share knowledge on topics that are both interesting and informative for all parents, and the series is designed to benefit parents with children ranging from preschool through grade 12.
I love that my husband and I can both listen to these together, or separately if time does not permit, and then come together to have a conversation on what we heard, how it applies to our own children and make a game plan going forward.
A Variety of Webinar Topics
A wide range of topics are covered including cyber bullying, the growth mindset and reimagining youth sports. They truly have covered the gamut when it comes to popular parenting struggles that we face each and every day. Upcoming webinars that are currently open for registration include:
