Pies for Preemies Challenge

Prematurity Awareness MonthI know when you think of November, you normally conjure up images of fall sweaters, peppermint lattes, and turkeys on the Thanksgiving dinner table.  But November has a different meaning to many members of the Houston Moms Blog team – and moms everywhere – because November is Prematurity Awareness Month.

We have four members of our HMB team that have been affected by prematurity in different ways.  As you may remember from my birth story, my daughter was born at 32 weeks due to me developing preeclampsia.  And we are not alone.  Approximately 15 million babies are born prematurely every year. Of those born prematurely, almost 7% do not survive.

In honor of our sweet preemies and all of yours, Houston Moms Blog is doing our part to raise prematurity awareness with the Pies For Preemies Challenge!

The Challenge is designed to be fun and serve a purpose at the same time.  In fact, you may even have loved ones lining up to smash pies in your face. {Thanks, family!}  In the end, my preemie herself was awarded the honors for my challenge and you can see how that went down here…

So now you’re probably wondering how you can get involved.  It’s easy!  You can join the Challenge with four simple steps ::

  1. Ask a friend or family member to take a video of you smashing a pie in your face.  {I personally used a whipped cream pie, because I wouldn’t waste a perfectly good apple pie myself.  That’s for eating!}
  2. Upload the video {even the awkward ones like mine} on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or all of the above.  Make sure to tag us in it so we can see!
  3. Make a Donation to the March of Dimes.  I’ve included the link to my personal team, but you can donate to whatever team you wish – or even start a team of your own!  It all goes to help prevent prematurity.
  4. Challenge your friends and family to join in!  The more people that are involved, the better.  Spread the word!

Want to do more?  World Prematurity Day is November 17th.  Make sure you {and your preemie!} wear purple that day to further awareness.  Skeeter will be decked out in her Prematurity Awareness shirt!
