In my mind, the 4th of July marks the halfway point of summer, and the second half of the season always zooms by twice as fast as the first. Blink, and I’ll be buying backpacks and thinking about bedtimes and morning alarms again. But before the rush of back-to-school season hits, I really would like to take a quick, relaxing getaway that everyone in my family will love. With airline prices making late-summer flying out of the budget, I am focusing my mini-vacay research efforts closer to home. My requirements:: a true getaway that we can get to by car in a few hours or less.
I’m delighted to report that I’ve found the perfect quick family getaway destination:: The Woodlands Resort. As a Houstonian, of course I’m familiar with The Woodlands, the master planned community just north of the city. But I didn’t realize it is home to such an amazing, luxurious resort that caters to adults and children alike! Since we’re bringing the kids along on this getaway, the family-centered amenities and activities really sold me on The Woodlands Resort.
Summer Outdoor Fun
A resort with a waterpark on-site? Yes, please! My nine year old twins will be all over the Forest Oasis Water Park at the Woodlands Resort, with underwater treasure hunts, 1,005 foot lazy river, and slides down the 30 foot tower! To make our waterpark experience even more luxurious, we can rent a cabana or the Crow’s Nest for shaded seating, cable TV, Wi-Fi and food and beverage service.
For a change of pace, if we can tear the kids away from the waterpark, we have the option of renting a kayak, SUP {Stand Up Paddleboard} or a paddle boat to explore Lake Harrison, located on the resort property. And if we need a break from the water, there are bikes available for rent to explore the nearby paths.
All Day Family Events and Food
There is zero chance the kids will be bored with the calendar of all-day, every day events happening at The Woodlands Resort. In addition to the hours they’ll spend in the water on our getaway, they also have the option to participate in some really fun, organized events just for them. My daughter can’t wait to create sand art and join the fun with the Limbo and Hula Hoop Action. My son thinks elbow tag and the water balloon fight sounds right up his alley. They both are intrigued by the Eat the Donut game that’s on the calendar the first day we’ll be at the resort. Many of these activities are free, and the rest are available for a small extra fee.
Each night, families can make S’mores {for an additional fee} and enjoy a big screen movie together, right by the pool. And, because this is Texas and summer weather can be crazy, there are always rainy day backups to all events.
Active kids means hungry kids, and The Woodlands Resort has four restaurants, plus room service to refuel the whole family. We’ll definitely eat a meal or two at The Cool Water Cafe, located right in Forest Oasis Water Park, and may have a pizza delivered right to our room one night too!
Fun for Parents, Too
As much as we’ll love watching our kids have a blast at the water park, pool and all the many activities catered just for them, my husband and I would like some getaway time for us as well. We’ll schedule Dad a round at the 18-hole championship golf course, Panther Trail, located at the resort, and later, I’ll indulge in a facial and massage at their spa. As we are about to wrap up another summer and head into another busy school year, I need all the relaxation I can get on this getaway!
