There was a bit of a hush that fell over the HMB team Facebook group when asked if there was someone who was interested in writing a post about waxing. It’s not exactly taboo…but people tend to think of that scene with Steve Carell getting his chest hair waxed. “AHHH KELLY CLARKSON!” But I’m here to tell you that if you go to the right boutique, that is NOT the case.
I went to visit our sponsors at Serene Wax Boutique for my 2nd ever bikini wax {first was a few weeks ago for my honeymoon trip to Mexico}, and I’ll admit – I was still apprehensive about the whole waxing experience. I met Sonia at the front desk, and she took me into the private room. You actually want to have your room look like the waxing room. The mirror and decorative script on the wall is straight out of Pinterest. Instantly relaxed.
Sonia explained which area she was going to wax and how soft their wax was. She also said since it was just a few weeks since my last wax, it shouldn’t be too bad.  I started telling her about my trip to Mexico, and before I knew it, the first strip had been pulled off. I knew I heard her count to three, but I really felt nothing. We talked about Houston and the weather and blogging, and I was done and totally surprised at how easy the whole process was. No sticky wax all down my leg. No awkward conversations. Totally professional and FAST!
And so, with some help from Sonia and Serene Wax Boutique, I’ve got a few basic tips to get the most out of your waxing experience.
Why Wax?
Why do we use crock pots? Why do we pay for EZ Tag? These things save time. Waxing saves time! No lie, it took me less than 30 minutes to get a bikini wax.  And I don’t have to go back for about four weeks. 4 WEEKS! Shaving is what? At least once a week. Daily for those diligent enough. Either way, it’s more than 30 minutes every 4 weeks. And since 7th grade, I’ve never been able to shave without missing a spot or cutting myself. I know I’m not alone.
With consistent waxing hair becomes thinner, and softer. Professionals, like Sonia at Serene Wax Boutique, are skilled and will make sure your skin isn’t burned, bruised, or lifted. The soft wax they use is cream based and hurts way less than any at-home kit you would be able to purchase. And honestly, I can’t use the bathroom without my kid coming in there looking for me. Plucking or waxing anything at home is out of the question.
Pain Management
It’s not that bad. Honestly. But Sonia let me know there are things you can do to ease the discomfort of waxing.
- Take a couple ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment
- NO alcohol or caffeine at least 6 hours before getting waxed
- If you are still worried, they also offer a numbing cream to apply to the area getting waxed
Maintenance
Once you get waxed, it’s very important to not go back to shaving. It can irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs. A big no-no anywhere on your body. To combat that, Sonia recommends the following:
- Exfoliate! Exfoliate! Exfoliate! Exfoliating removes dead skin and prevents ingrown hairs. Serene Wax Boutique offers a brand of body scrubs that are vegan and cruelty free to make sure every inch of your body is smooth!
- Let at least 3 weeks’ worth of hair grow back for best results at your next appointment
- Use an after cream to keep skin moisturized
Services
And don’t think that Serene Wax Boutique only does bikini waxes. They offer a full line to keep you as hairless as you would like to be. Bikini, Brazilian, legs, eyebrows, and even vajaycials! Yes, a Vajaycial. A full list of services and current pricing can be found here.

Will have to try this team out! I’ve been looking for a good wax spot and these ladies certainly sound awesome!
i have waxed, I love it, I just don’t love the price tag!
Well a free one will do you good. Good luck!
I’ve never tried it, and have always been a little scared… but I’d be willing to give it a shot! 🙂
I was super nervous too even though it was my second go round and it honestly was not that bad.
My water retired last year and I miss her! Would love to find a new one!!
Ha ha not water! Waxer!!
I have been waxed once, by a different company. I was very pleased with the results and the ease the technician made me feel on my first time. Mine grew back rather quickly though, and that was the only thing I wasn’t fond of.
Yes please!
I’ve been a few times and some are bad and some are good. I’d like to try this place!
I have never tried it, but I am willing. I am so tired of the weekly shaving routine!
