Where to Celebrate Juneteenth in Houston

Juneteenth is this Saturday, June 19. There are lots of events happening around town for you to celebrate Juneteenth in Houston with the whole family this year!

When I was growing up, I thought Juneteenth was only celebrated in Texas. After all, it was Galveston where the holiday was first celebrated. When I went to college up north, I remember asking people about it and they had no idea what the day meant.

If you still don’t know here’s the summary:: After the Civil War, June 19, 1865 was the day that the slaves here in Texas found out that they were free…almost 3 years after they were actually freed. Although Juneteenth was originally celebrated in Texas, it is now celebrated across the United States as the day our journey to freedom began.

Thankfully, this part of Black History is more widely known and more widely celebrated. Here are 5 events going on in the Houston area to help you and your family learn and celebrate this day in {Black} American History.
