Bump Diaries :: Month 1

Bump Diaries

Welcome to Bump Diaries – a new series on Houston Moms Blog! One of our contributors is expecting, and here she will share her journey – the good AND the ugly – with all of you.  It is sort of like an homage to the original mommy blog where we provide a little peek into the life of a {pregnant} mom.

Even though this post appears to be written by a guest blogger – I’m not a guest. I am a regular contributor, and I am 4 1/2 weeks pregnant! {That was so fun to type!!!} Since this is month 1, I’m not sharing my identity yet. We still have another month or two until we are ready for that. So I’ll stay anonymous until we see the doctor and tell our friends and family.

I just got through that week.  You know the one – where you will either get a positive test or your dreaded period. It felt like one of the longest weeks of my life! And the worst part about it is that just when you think that you have a symptom that makes you think you *really* might be pregnant, you read something that says, “You might be pregnant, but that is also a common symptom that your period is about to begin.” Why is every symptom of early pregnancy also a sign that your period is about to begin?! I wish those stupid online quizzes were as reliable as a pregnancy test! Ha!

Even so, I had an idea that I might be pregnant. The benefit of having done this before is I know what it feels like during those early weeks of pregnancy. When you are pregnant for the first time it’s maddening because you really have no idea. But it gets a little easier to decipher when it’s not your first rodeo.

My earliest symptoms before that positive test were…

  •  Total exhaustion. Us moms are always tired, that’s a part of the gig. But I was going to bed when my kid{s} went to bed, which is especially odd since I am a night owl. {Did you see how tricky I was there? I said “kid{s}” so you wouldn’t have a clue if I have 1 kid or 10 kids.} I was also falling asleep midday if given the opportunity, and I don’t even like naps.
  •  Potty breaks in the middle of the night and frequent stops during the day. Not sure why as the baby was just implanted, and, according to my all my apps, is only the size of a poppy seed. How could it already be pressing on my bladder? Must be a hormone thing.
  • Unusual amounts of tears. I’m not a super emotional female. So when I would cry after each dance on Dancing with the Stars or each person’s story on The Voice, I had a hunch that I just might be pregnant.

Any time I think I actually might be pregnant; I try hard to wait and take the test until I’ve actually missed the first day of my cycle. That morning I woke up at 4am for that middle of the night potty break. Since first morning urine {sorry…there might be some gross words in this series} is best, I knew I had to take the test then.

Immediately, 2 lines popped up!!!

positive test

If there is one thing I’ve learned in all my years of taking pregnancy tests it’s this – if you are pregnant, the lines will show up. Yes, maybe you do need to wait a couple more days. Yes, there will always be exceptions to this. But those things are pretty accurate.

I couldn’t believe it! I was pregnant! Clearly there was no chance of going back to bed after that. It was a really sweet couple of hours before my husband woke up—a time when only I knew about this little life that had begun inside of me. But as soon as my husband’s alarm went off I immediately shared the fun news—we were having a baby!!!!!!

The anticipation of not knowing if I was pregnant was exchanged for the anticipation of not knowing how this would go. We all know people who have miscarried or we’ve miscarried ourselves. The official stats all contradict themselves, but they are there and we all know it’s a possibility. I’ve tried with my previous pregnancy{ies} to keep a mindset of…

Every day is a gift. I will celebrate each day we have with this little life—whether that’s 1 or 1,000,000.

So now we wait and see what happens at the doctor’s office in a few weeks!

I’ll check back in next month to share Bump Diaries :: Month 2 and also share my identity! Any fun suggestions of how to do the big reveal?

Let’s make these comments a great resource to expecting moms! What were YOUR earliest symptoms that first month?
