Moms Talking Nerdy

I like big books and I cannot lie.  You other mommies can’t deny.  When I’m in a bookstore with an itty bitty case and a big book in my face, I get sprung.

Real life.

I am always reading a book.  Me and my Kindle Paperwhite became instant best friends the second I started it up, and I still frequent Half Price Books because of the smell.   My friends and I will have book swaps where we discuss our reads, and watch movies based of the books, and yell in the theater about how wrong the screenwriters got it.  {I’m looking at you Silver Lining’s Playbook!}  And…look, we like books.

When I got my first Kindle three years ago, I found out about Goodreads.  A virtual bookshelf that lets you keep track of what you read what you want to read and talk to other people about what they’ve read and what they think about it.  So instead of resolutions {although Kelly’s goal to do LESS is brilliant}, I set myself up for the Goodreads Challenge.

Goodreads Challenge

Pre-baby I would set a personal goal for 50 books a year.  Now that my life includes wrangling a toddler, I set it a little lower.  30 books.  Truthfully, I have yet to reach that goal.  But that’s why it’s called a challenge.  Plus, I plan to use this as an excuse for quiet time at Starbucks.  I need to get my book count up!  But don’t let my low numbers fool you. It is totally possible to read and raise a child.  Check out HMB’s own Heather.  She went through 47 books last year and hosts a weekly link up for book reviews.  WHAT!

I even try to get out and go to book signings.  Blue Willow Bookstore on Memorial hosts a lot of book signings, but I absolutely HAD to go when Jenny Lawson {known in the web world as The Bloggess} came to town and read a chapter from her book.  Murder by the Book also had a fantastic signing by Chuck Palahniuk ON MY BIRTHDAY at a bar on Fountainview.  I mean what an awesome way to turn 31!

It’s so important as a mom that we take time for ourselves.  Unwinding in front of a book with a cup of coffee is perfect for me.  It’s easy.  It’s cheap.  I can take my sweet time.  And most importantly, my daughter sees me reading.  She knows that mommy likes to read books, and I’ve made sure that I pass the joy of reading on to her.  Those late nights when she refuses to go to bed, I just curl up with my Paperwhite {backlit screen FTW!} and read while she makes shadow puppets into the wee hours of the morning.  She loves to pick out a book for me to read to her before she goes to bed.  Her first party was even book themed, and I plastered Where the  Wild Things Are signs all over the house and asked everyone to bring a book to build her library.

Breonna was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She is recently married to Tyrone, a graphic designer. They currently reside on the West Side of this great city. A big fan of movies, books, photography, and Starbucks, she currently finds herself knee-deep in the throes of being a mommy to Addy {Feb 2011}. Breonna spends the typical 9-5 doing yadda yadda yadda at her job {yes, it’s that nondescript and uninteresting}. She started blogging as a way to do movie reviews, but that gave way to pregnancy blogging. She eventually landed her own space of the internet on BreWrites as well as on Twitter and Instagram {@brewrites} where she talks about everything from the sassiness of her child, to the most recent concert tickets she got her hands on, to the occasional piece of short fiction.

  1. This is such a great idea! I told my husband I’d be pushing it to read 1 book a month but that is my goal. With full time working, wifing and moming, it’s hard to squeeze reading and exercise in so late at night! BUT I think this is inspiration to read wayyyy more because I do enjoy it so much!

    • The wifi gets me! But it’s just a fun challenge. I hope you get to meet it. If you are on Goodreads, you can friend me and we can motivate each other to get through it. Here’s my profile.

  2. When I grow up, I wanna be in a massive library with endless light and food surrounded by books. Lately, my life is all Dr Seuss and Winnie The Pooh but to watch my kids love reading makes my lack of adult-type big person worth it 🙂

    Love you, Bre-nerd 🙂
