Preparing for Family Photos: Q & A With a Houston Photographer

We are proud to partner with local businesses like Claire Thom Photography to bring what our area has to offer to our Houston Moms audience!
Thinking about booking an annual family photo session? While I love having pictures of my family in every season, we all know that sometimes the process can be daunting. You’ve got to get everyone dressed up and in the mood to smile without complaint. Family photos can be stressful!
We spoke to local Houston photographer, Claire Thom, for a little Q & A about her thoughts on her work, motherhood, and even some helpful tips for busy moms preparing their family for a stress-free photo shoot!

Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi, I am Claire and I am from Scotland. I moved to Houston 5 years ago with my husband, he is in the oil and gas industry. My kids are my world, but I also love coffee, chocolate and fitness. While I used to be an HR manager for a large oil and gas company in Dubai, I have also been a photographer forever. I love helping families document how they are growing and changing. I have two children Sophie and Callum. They are 12 and 10. They’re growing up so fast they are the reason I do what I do! Because I totally understand how important family photos are to document them as they grow!

What does your business offer?

My business, Claire Thom Photography, provides fun, relaxed sessions for newborn, family and senior sessions. I offer stress free, relaxed sessions that result in beautiful art for you to hang on your walls.

What do you love most about your work as a photographer?

I love building relationships with my clients and their families – seeing them grow each year is amazing! My business has been growing and I love every minute of it!

How does being a mom help you in your work?

Being a Mom (or Mum as we say in Scotland) helps because I get it – I totally understand the stress of a family session – and I am here to help. I also love connecting with the little ones! I have had a few sessions when the kids have asked me to go home with them or if I can join them for Thanksgiving Dinner – it is amazing to leave a session knowing that the kids and family have had fun.

Do you have any tips for families preparing for upcoming family photos?

The main thing is – don’t stress. Your family is your family and I love to capture you just as you are! My photography captures the connection and love between you and I wouldn’t have it any other way. For practical tips like outfits I would always suggest basing the colors around Moms outfit, and I would suggest going for coordinating rather than matching. I have loads of other tips on my blog.

Thank you Claire, for your feedback! Your passion for photography and family shine through your words.
